Another Ground Hog Day Pancake Supper

First Christian Church Mens Group hosted another pancake supper for the benefit of Family Resource Center on January 29, 2011.  It was a great time to visit with folks and have a nice warm plate of pancakes and sausage.  Thanks for this great community support.

Mentors needed

We sure could use a few more male mentors.  Our goal for this school year has been 20 mentors/20 youth.  Recruitment has been an ebb and flow.  At one point we had 19/19, but then slipped back to 14/14, as both youth and mentors opted out and opted in.  We find that both youth and mentors grow and reach new heights as they work together.  The process takes time and patience.  Our role is to support the relationship and encourage the development of new perspectives.

The latest happenings

Today, January 30th, First Christian Church mens' group held a very nice Ground Hog Day pancake supper to raise funds for Family Resource Center.  They particularly like our father program, but are also interested in our mentor program.  Additionally they want to help us with building maintenance projects.  It has been so fun to have board members, mentors and youth support this event.  We provided a digital photo frame showing some of our work and events.  The pastor, Susan Barton, gave us many good ideas about collaborations.

How do we figure into the economic development of a community?

Non-profits play a large role in economic development.  The services that they provide encourage and support residents.  They bring money into a community to help with the cost of food, utilities, rent, medical care etc.  This is not money from the community.  It is money into the community.  This accomplishes two things.  Residents have a healthier standard of living, thus are more able to be productive citizens.  Money is inserted in the to community's economy, thus stimulating growth of the industries that supply utilities, rent, medical care etc.
